On 8th February 2022, we’re celebrating Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) 16th birthday with a recap of our 15th anniversary achievements, and a look forward to what’s next for ONC, ocean observing, the blue economy and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, 2021-2030.
15th anniversary in review
Throughout 2021, we brought our 15th anniversary celebrations directly into the homes and workplaces of Canadians and the global ocean observing community. Highlights of these engaging virtual opportunities included an ocean science webinar series and an engaging #ONC15 retrospective video and a creative social media campaign, which captured ONC’s 15-year history in 15 weekly chapters.
This interactive story map aggregates the full #ONC15 retrospective, 2006-2021.

2030 Strategic Plan: advancing our knowledge of the ocean at a critical time
Our 15th year coincided with the beginning of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. These two milestones offered a timely opportunity for our leadership team to reflect on how far we have come as an organization, and to plan an even more impactful future. The result is an inspiring new vision, mission and plan of action which will guide ONC’s #knowtheocean activities during the next decade.
We invite you to read through our comprehensive 2030 Strategic Plan: “Advancing our knowledge of the ocean at a critical time”.
“Sixteen years ago, ONC pioneered a new approach to conducting ocean research that was not limited by weather, batteries or data storage,” comments Kate Moran, ONC’s president and CEO. “Over this time period, ONC has not only delivered for science, but has also provided ocean intelligence that benefits society and helps Canada’s blue economy grow.”
