About Ocean Networks Canada
Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), an initiative of the University of Victoria (UVic), is a Major Research Facility of Canada, and a Decade Implementing Partner for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).
ONC operates world-leading deep-sea and coastal observatories on Canada’s Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic coasts, and in the Southern (Antarctic) Ocean. Its cabled infrastructure provides continuous power and internet connectivity to scientific instruments, cameras, and more than 12,000 ocean sensors. ONC also manages mobile and land-based assets, including coastal radar.
The observatories generate continuous streams of sensor data, video, and underwater acoustic recordings used by more than 70,000 users worldwide. These data are accessible through the ONC Oceans 3.0 data portal.
ONC is transforming ocean science through data technology innovation and partnerships that support scientific discovery, safer coastal communities, climate solutions, and a sustainable planet future.
ONC acknowledges, with thanks, funding and support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Government of Canada.
