Today, on World Oceans Day (8 June), join us in celebrating the crucial role that the ocean plays in our lives. The theme of the 2022 United Nations World Oceans Day is "Revitalization: Collective Action For The Ocean."
The ocean connects, sustains, and supports us all—but its health is under serious threat. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and sustainability.
Ocean Networks Canada's ocean observatories on the east, west and Arctic coastlines of Canada accelerate scientific discovery and deliver solutions that support ocean-and-planet sustainability for future generations.
With the Pacific Ocean at our home doorstep, ONC along with other leading researchers at the University of Victoria have a unique opportunity to explore and protect our precious waters. Together we are documenting important issues – such as climate change – and working alongside partners to offer innovative solutions.
To mark World Oceans Day, ONC is proud to locally support Oceans Week Victoria and nationally to partner with the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition in celebrating Ocean Week Canada (OWC), with more than 100 events, activities, and ocean knowledge sharing opportunities occurring nationwide including the Ocean Festival.
Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world, and has committed to protecting 25% of Canada’s ocean space by 2025 and 30% by 2030. ONC is working in partnership with government, Indigenous and coastal communities, industry, researchers and other stakeholders to ensure a better ocean future.
“In 2022, Ocean Week Canada and the Ocean Festival will provide unprecedented opportunities for Canadians to appreciate the critical role that our ocean plays in the health of the planet and the protections necessary to ensure a sustainable ocean future for all. As we launch into the UN Ocean Decade, Ocean Networks Canada, an initiative of the University of Victoria, will contribute to the project through the creation of toolkits and planning of local and national events together with our partners from coast-to-coast-to-coast.” - Dr. Kate Moran, President, Ocean Networks Canada
