Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) operates seafloor telecommunication cables and scientific equipment in Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound. These allow ONC to collect freely available oceanographic data in real time from these locations and offshore from Vancouver Island. Additionally, Google has installed two Topaz seafloor telecommunication cables that pass through Alberni Inlet and into Barkley Sound.
