Advancing Indigenous Partnerships in Ocean Science for Sustainability (AIPOSS) is an endorsed project under United Nation (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘Ocean Decade’) led by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. The project aims to establish a clear path forward toward tangible Indigenous-led solutions to ocean sustainability, and to improve Indigenous capacity for ocean governance and ocean change resilience.
The project is led by Ken Paul of the Wolastoqey Nation in partnership with Ocean Networks Canada and the Ocean Frontiers Institute at Dalhousie University. This project was supported partially by a financial contribution from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Pisces Research Project Management Inc. is also a key partner in the project.
In alignment with the Ocean Decade priorities, the project aims to achieve equitable, sustainable, and inclusive ocean economy sectors within Canada that better connect Indigenous communities with international networks.
The project will bring together Indigenous leaders and potential investment partners from industry, academia, foundations, and non-governmental organizations.
Outcomes:
- Improved Indigenous capacity for ocean governance and ocean change resilience.
- Indigenous peoples involvement in shaping all of Canada’s contributions to the UN Ocean Decade.
- Indigenous peoples and ocean scientists work together as equals to address ocean sustainability challenges.
- Demonstrated increase in the application and use of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in ocean science.
Deliverables:
- A blue economy strategy toolkit.
- A climate change preparedness toolkit.
- Investment-ready community-based engagement roadmaps to enable participation in ocean research and build research capacity.
- Investment-ready opportunities for meaningful Indigenous participation in sustainable blue economy pathways for Canada.
- Link created to international Indigenous participants.
- Link created among Indigenous participants and relevant research groups.
The project runs April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2024.
The UN has issued 10 ocean decade challenges for collective impact. Challenge #4 calls for the development of a sustainable and equitable ocean economy that aligns with key priorities within the AIPOSS project.
